Only one car key left? Plan a useful spare
A spare is most useful when it is compatible, complete and available when the everyday key is not. Here is what to discuss before arranging one.

Start with the key you already use
Confirm whether the current key opens the doors, operates the remote and starts the engine reliably. Say if any function is intermittent. A spare-key request based on a healthy working key is different from trying to reproduce a key that already has a fault. Include the registration and a photograph if it helps identify the key type.
Decide what the second key needs to do
A key can have a mechanical blade, a transponder, remote buttons or proximity functions. Ask which compatible options are available and what each quote includes. The cheapest item described online as a “car key” may be a casing or blank rather than a ready-to-use replacement. A familiar shape is not enough to establish that the electronics are appropriate for your vehicle.
Ask before buying parts yourself
If you already have a replacement key from another supplier, share its details before the appointment. Say whether it is new or used and whether it has ever been programmed.
