Key recognition

Car says “key not detected”: what should you check?

The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Record what still works and use the instructions for your exact vehicle before assuming it needs a new key.

What you need to know

  • Record the exact warning and what the key still does.
  • If available, note how a working spare behaves.
  • Use your vehicle handbook for any backup-start procedure.

Note the complete symptom

Write down the exact dashboard message and when it appears. Does the remote lock or unlock the doors? Does the display come on? Is the problem constant or does the key sometimes work? A short video can capture a message that disappears quickly. These observations are useful because opening the doors and authorising the engine to start can involve different functions.

See what a spare key does

If you have a known working spare, note whether the vehicle responds differently to it using the normal manufacturer instructions. One key failing while another works is different from every key failing at once. Do not conclude that the cause is definitely the key or definitely the car from this comparison alone. It is information to include when requesting assessment.

Use the vehicle handbook

Some vehicles provide a specific backup position or procedure when a smart key is not detected. The location and method depend on the exact vehicle. Consult the correct handbook rather than following a video for another model. If the key battery needs attention, use the stated battery type and replacement instructions. A battery replacement is not a universal answer to every key-recognition fault.

Mention recent changes

Tell Sebastian about a dropped or wet key, a casing repair, a recently purchased remote or work on the vehicle battery. Say if the car stood unused before the problem appeared. If a warning began after another repair, explain that timing. Do not erase information by guessing which parts must be changed; a clear account of the sequence is more useful.

Ask for assessment before buying a key

A compatible replacement or programming may be appropriate, but vehicle-side issues can produce similar symptoms. Send the registration, location, message and spare-key result for review. Call during working hours if you are stranded and need urgent availability. If the car is safely parked, WhatsApp or a quote request allows Sebastian to review the details before the visit is arranged. You can continue the conversation without committing to an online booking.
