Van key problems: get the right details ready
When a work van cannot be opened or started, access, the key and the day’s work all matter. Here is how to make the first request useful.

What you need to know
- Say whether the cab, load area or both are inaccessible.
- Explain if a key still starts the engine, even if the remote fails.
- Have the registration, location and vehicle authority ready.
Access and starting are separate questions
A remote that will not unlock the load area is not necessarily the same request as a van that will not start. Tell Sebastian which doors you can open, whether a normal mechanical key is available and whether the engine recognises it. If every key is missing, say so at the start. The registration and a photo of the key you still have can help explain the situation without guessing the fault.
Mention added locks and earlier repairs
Work vehicles may have additional locks or changes made by a previous owner. Say whether the problem concerns the original vehicle key or a separately fitted lock. Include previous key repairs, a replacement casing or a remote bought online. Keep any key pieces or supplied part details available. This information helps avoid quoting for the wrong system and makes clear which work needs checking before attendance.
Use the current location, not the depot
If the van is at a customer’s site or parked away from its usual base, send that location. Add gate instructions, parking restrictions and whether the vehicle can move. For a company or leased van, explain who is authorised to arrange the work and have the relevant identification or authority available if requested. A planned spare-key job is easier to discuss when the vehicle and working keys can be present at an agreed location.
Choose urgent help or planned key work
Call during working hours if the fault has stopped your work and you need availability now. WhatsApp is useful for today or tomorrow because the location, registration and photos stay together. If the van still starts and can be secured, a flexible quote can cover a spare or an intermittent remote fault. Sebastian confirms compatibility and the proposed work before the visit is agreed; the vehicle brand alone does not guarantee that a particular key is suitable.
